Kemerburgaz, Residential district in Eyüpsultan, Turkey
Kemerburgaz is a residential district in the southwestern part of Belgrad Forest in Istanbul's Eyüpsultan district, situated between the historic Kurt Kemeri and Uzun Kemer aqueducts. The area blends historical features with modern housing and sits within the green expanse of the forest.
The area was known as Pyrgos from the Byzantine period until 1453, a name meaning tower, and was renamed Burgaz following the Ottoman conquest. This change in name marks the cultural transition that has defined the neighborhood since then.
The neighborhood expresses its Turkish roots through several mosques such as Kemerburgaz Mosque, Mimar Sinan Mosque, and Hüseyin Şahin Mosque. These places of worship shape the daily rhythm and appearance of the area.
The area is well connected through regular bus lines, minibus services, and metro lines, making it easy to reach central Istanbul. Visitors should know that closeness to Belgrad Forest means green areas to explore, but also expect some slopes and uneven terrain.
Galatasaray Sports Club has begun construction of the Metin Oktay sports facilities, with major building work taking place in 2023. This development will reshape the area and makes it noteworthy for sports enthusiasts.
