Uzungöl, Mountain lake settlement in Çaykara, Turkey
Uzungöl is a mountain lake in a deep valley at high altitude, surrounded by dense forests and mountains reaching about 2,600 meters (8,500 feet). The shoreline is marked by scattered houses and cleared areas that sit naturally within the mountainous landscape.
The natural lake formed centuries ago when a landslide blocked the Haldizen Stream, creating a dam that filled the valley with water. This geological event shaped the landscape and turned the location into a place where people could settle.
Traditional wooden houses line the lake shores, while local restaurants serve fresh mountain trout prepared according to regional recipes.
To reach the lake, drive about 95 kilometers southeast from Trabzon city center through mountain roads into the Çaykara district. Mountain passes may vary in condition depending on the season, so check conditions before planning your visit.
The lake water often mirrors the surrounding mountain peaks with clarity, while evening fog creates different patterns across the surface each night. This changing light and mist show makes each evening distinctive and hard to predict.
