Yeniyurt Castle, Roman castle in Turkey
Yeniyurt Castle is an archaeological site on a hill in Mersin Province with remains of walls, towers, a small basilica, and a necropolis from different historical periods. The ruins display stone structures of various sizes and shapes that were partly rebuilt and renewed by Byzantine and Cilician Armenian builders.
The site was founded by Greeks during the Hellenistic period to control the valley and monitor trade routes. Later, Byzantine and Cilician Armenian rulers took over the fortress, adding new structures and reshaping existing parts to suit their needs.
The name Yeniyurt refers to a fortress designed to control and secure the region. Visitors can observe different architectural styles left by Byzantine and Cilician Armenian builders, showing how important this location was to multiple cultures across different periods.
The site is located roughly 25 kilometers from the town of Erdemli and 60 kilometers from Mersin on a hill with good views of the surrounding land. Visitors should prepare for changeable weather, wind, and cooler temperatures, especially due to the elevation of approximately 805 meters.
From the castle one can overlook the Kayacı valley and the Limonlu River, two natural features that were crucial to the fortress's strategic location. Today these waterways and surrounding valley stand as quiet witnesses to how much the ancient settlement depended on its landscape.
