Rexx Sineması, Independent cinema in Caferağa neighborhood of Kadıköy, Turkey
Rexx Sineması is a movie theater in the Caferağa neighborhood of Kadıköy, Istanbul, housed in a historic building on Sakız Gülü Street. It has four screening halls and sits close to the main commercial and restaurant strip of Kadıköy.
The building served as the Apollo Theatre from the 1870s onward and was one of the main performance venues in the area. It was here that Afife Jale performed, becoming the first Turkish woman to appear on stage in the country.
The Rexx screens festival selections and films from Turkey and abroad that do not appear in large multiplex chains. It draws an audience of people who seek out these titles and treat the cinema as a meeting point for film lovers.
The cinema is on Sakız Gülü Street, easy to reach on foot from the main stops and streets of Kadıköy. A terrace in front of the building offers a place to wait before a screening or to step out between films.
Even though the building now works as a cinema, original architectural details from its theater years are still visible in parts of the halls. These small traces give the space a story that has nothing to do with film.
