Taoyuan International Airport, International aviation hub in Taoyuan City, Taiwan
Taoyuan International Airport is an aviation hub in Taoyuan City, located about 40 kilometers west of Taipei. The site includes two parallel runways and several terminal buildings connected by covered walkways and automated trains.
The facility opened in 1979 as Chiang Kai-shek International Airport and initially served mainly regional flights. In 2006, the name changed to Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport to reflect its geographic location and growing international role.
The halls display Taiwanese bamboo work and ceramic installations that stretch between waiting areas and shopping passages. Visitors can observe local tea ceremonies in the quieter zones, where traditional trays and cups are on display.
The facility sits about 40 kilometers west of Taipei and is reachable by the Taoyuan Airport MRT, which runs every 15 minutes. Travelers should allow enough time for the journey and follow the signage leading to the different terminals.
The planned Terminal 3 will carry a wave-shaped roof following a design by Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners. The structure is intended to handle an additional 45 million passengers per year in the future.
