Dadaocheng, Commercial neighborhood in Datong District, Taiwan
Dadaocheng is a commercial neighborhood along the Tamsui River in the Datong District of Taipei, centered around narrow early-20th-century buildings. Western and neo-baroque facades line the streets, with Dihua Street forming the commercial heart of the area.
This neighborhood developed into an international trade center in the late 19th century when Tamsui Harbor opened for the export of tea, fabric, and Chinese medicinal herbs. Merchants from across the region settled here and built warehouses along the waterfront streets.
The Taipei Xia-Hai City God Temple stands at Dihua and Yongchang Streets, with regular ceremonies dedicated to the City God and Matchmaker deity.
The Ningxia Night Market lies nearby and offers local specialties such as fried taro balls and shredded chicken rice at simple food stalls. A visit in the afternoon allows exploring both shops and markets before nightfall arrives.
Museum 207 on Dihua Street occupies a former medicine shop from 1962 and displays local exhibits about neighborhood history inside its rooms. From the rooftop terrace, you see across the narrow lanes and old facades of the surroundings.
