Tianma Tea House, Traditional tea house in Datong District, Taipei, Taiwan
Tianma Tea House is a traditional tea salon located in the Datong District of Taipei, Taiwan. The building displays Japanese-era wooden construction techniques and maintains the architectural layout typical of early twentieth-century tea establishments.
In February 1947, an enforcement officer shot a civilian selling untaxed tobacco outside this building. The incident triggered protests across the island that became known as the 228 Incident and shaped political developments in Taiwan for decades.
The tea house functions as a Jī-jī-pat-uî-tsí, a designated space where people gather for social interactions and discussions while participating in traditional tea ceremonies.
Guests receive guidance on brewing techniques that vary according to the type of tea being served. Visitors can request multiple infusions from the same leaves to observe how flavors develop through repeated steeping.
The first infusion is poured away before serving to warm both the leaves and the equipment. This practice also helps remove any dust and prepares the leaves to release their full flavor in subsequent brews.
