Alishan National Scenic Area is a protected zone in eastern Taiwan that covers mountain ranges, forests, and different elevation zones. The area spans several townships and reaches from lower slopes to peaks above 2,500 meters (8,200 feet).
Japanese authorities established a national park here in the 1930s to protect the forests and mountains. Taiwan placed the area under new administration after 2000 and gave it scenic area status.
The Tsou have lived here for centuries and maintain communities with their own ceremonies and customs. Visitors can see handwoven textiles and local crafts made using traditional methods in some villages.
A mountain railway and a winding road pass through the region and connect several settlements. Fog and clouds often reduce visibility, so early morning hours offer clearer views.
Five natural phenomena define this place: sunrises, evening clouds, a sea of clouds, old trees, and the railway network through the mountains. These features draw photographers and hikers alike.
