Chiayi County is an administrative region in southwestern Taiwan stretching from Mount Yu to the Taiwan Strait. The area covers mountains, flatlands, and coastal sections across roughly 1,900 square kilometers.
The region was originally called Tirosen by the Hoanya people and was renamed Chiayi by the Qianlong Emperor in 1788. This change honored the residents' loyalty during a rebellion.

The Alishan Forest Railway connects the plain to mountain areas and passes through different climate zones. Regular bus lines run between the two cities and sixteen townships across the region.
The Southern Branch of the National Palace Museum in Taibao City displays Asian art collections outside the capital. The museum sits in the administrative center and has been open to visitors since 2015.
