Wanluan is a rural township in Pingtung County in southern Taiwan that covers approximately 61 square kilometers of land. It encompasses fourteen villages with residential areas and agricultural land spread across its administrative boundaries.
The township grew from an agricultural settlement into an established administrative division over time. A significant turning point came in 1981 when a national president visited, bringing wider attention to the region.
The area has maintained local food traditions, particularly the preparation of braised pork hock with medicinal herbs that remains a signature dish in family kitchens and restaurants. This cooking method reflects how people here connect daily meals to regional customs and ingredients.
The area is connected to neighboring towns like Neipu, Jhutian, and Chaozhou through a network of roads suitable for car travel and local buses. Visitors can easily move between different villages to see rural life and farmland.
The township has built international ties through a sister city arrangement with Kamikoani, a town in Akita Prefecture, Japan. This connection demonstrates how rural areas can forge cross-border relationships and cultural exchanges with distant regions.
