Bopiliao, Historic commercial complex in Wanhua District, Taiwan.
Bopiliao is a preserved row of brick buildings in Wanhua District, arranged along a narrow lane and showing both Chinese and Western building elements. The facades alternate between arcades on the ground floor and two-story structures with wooden details recalling early trading days.
This neighborhood arose in the late eighteenth century as part of a trading route linking two settlements in northern Taiwan. The surviving buildings mostly date from later decades when the area grew into a busy market district.
This area preserves an old name referring to a path where bundles of firewood were carried, pointing to early activities in the neighborhood. Visitors today find exhibition spaces showing craft techniques and local working methods from past centuries.
This area sits a short walk from Longshan Temple and can be reached through a small lane off Kangding Road. Visitors should watch for slippery stones under the arcades during wet weather.
A planned elementary school in the mid-twentieth century prevented demolition of the old houses because the site remained reserved for school construction. The school was eventually built elsewhere, and these buildings survived by accident until recent restoration.
