Jingzaijiao Tile-paved Salt Fields is a former lake bed turned salt production area in Beimen featuring rows of rectangular ponds separated by ceramic tile paths. The entire layout follows a grid pattern designed to maximize sun exposure and control water flow across the coastal terrain.
The location began in 1818 as Laidong Salt Fields and was redesigned in 1952 into Taiwan's only centrally-planned tiled salt production area. This transformation represented a shift toward more organized methods while maintaining the fundamental practice of solar evaporation.
The salt fields show how local workers historically used basic solar techniques to transform seawater into salt, a practice that shaped the region's economy for generations.
The site is best explored on foot since the flat terrain makes walking comfortable and raised viewing areas offer good perspectives of the salt ponds. Bring sun protection as there is minimal shade across the open fields.
The fields use specially arranged ceramic tiles as functional barriers that prevent salt crystals from contaminating with soil during harvesting. This tiled design was a local innovation that fundamentally changed how salt could be extracted efficiently.
