Old Tainan Branch of Kangyo Bank

The former Kangyo Bank is a neoclassical building standing at a major intersection in central Tainan. The distinctive feature is the covered pedestrian system within the colonnade, which provides shelter from the sun and rain.

The building was constructed in 1928 during Japanese rule as a branch of Nippon Kangyo Bank. In 1983, it was partially demolished for road expansion, though it retained its essential structural features.

The building stands at a central address where wealthy families and business owners settled during the Japanese colonial period. The architecture reflects how this street section became a financial hub for the city.

The location is in the city center and easily accessible on foot when walking along Zhongzheng Road or surrounding streets. The building remains in active use as a bank, which may limit interior access for casual visitors.

The colonnade features an unusual layout where pedestrian walkways run beneath the covered structure rather than beside it. This inward-facing arrangement creates a distinctive passage that differs from standard arcades found throughout the city.
