Wunuan Stone Bridge, Stone footbridge in Jiaoxi, Taiwan.
Wunuan Stone Bridge is a footbridge in Jiaoxi that spans about 4 meters in length and 2.6 meters in width, built from six long stone slabs connected by mortise and tenon joints. The structure shows traditional craftsmanship and simply links two sides across the water.
The bridge was built during the Qing Dynasty and served as the main route connecting Jiaoxi and Yilan for trade and moving goods. This role made it a vital piece of infrastructure for the region's development.
Local farmers sharpened their tools on the stone tablet beside the bridge for generations, and the repeated wear left curved marks that you can still see today.
You can reach the bridge by train to Sicheng Station or by car along Provincial Highway 9 from Taipei. Check travel conditions before visiting since access details depend on where you are coming from.
The bridge stones came from ship ballast used in trade voyages, connecting their origin to the region's maritime commerce. The nearby Fude Temple honors Wu Sha, the founding settler of the Yilan area, linking this spot to the area's early settlement story.
