Jiaoxi St. Joseph Church, Catholic church in Jiaoxi, Taiwan
Jiaoxi St. Joseph Church is a modern Catholic place of worship supported by four cubic columns that lift the main hall above ground. The open space beneath allows pedestrians to pass through, creating a connection between the street level and the building above.
Construction finished in 2019 under architect Wei-Li Liao's guidance at AMBi Studio, introducing a fresh approach to modern religious building design. The project emerged from an effort to combine contemporary architecture with spiritual function.
The interior timber hall forms an egg shape that evokes safety and care. The seven roof openings above reference the days of creation and shape how light and air move through the space.
The building relies on natural ventilation systems to manage temperature and air flow throughout the space. The open design makes navigation straightforward, and the pedestrian passage beneath provides easy access for all visitors.
Grilles positioned carefully throughout the structure cast light patterns that resemble sunlight filtering through leaves. This thoughtful placement creates constantly changing patterns that mirror the effect of forest light.
