Xin Changxing Shu Ji, Toucheng

Xin Changxing Shu Ji in Chengdong Village is a monument from the Qing Dynasty period that displays carved wood details and classical roof tile patterns reminiscent of traditional Taiwanese architecture. The building combines a retail front area with residential spaces within a single structure.

The building dates from the Qing Dynasty and was an important trading establishment in Toucheng that brought local merchants together and fostered exchange between different communities. This commercial role made it a hub for business activities in the region.

The building shows how merchants in Taiwan lived and worked, with the shop on the lower level and living quarters above. The arrangement of rooms follows a pattern visible in many old trading structures throughout the region.

The location sits near Toucheng Old Street with numerous restaurants and shops within walking distance, making it easy to explore the surrounding area. It is advisable to walk through the neighborhood to fully appreciate the building and neighboring trading structures.

The building preserves its original dual-purpose design with the trading facade and living quarters coexisting in a practical arrangement that shows how merchants integrated their business and home. This living-and-working arrangement was entirely normal for affluent traders of the time.
