Shuiyang Forest, Lake in Alishan Township, Taiwan
Shuiyang Forest is a lake in Alishan Township formed when a major landslide during an earthquake flooded the area and submerged numerous trees. The body of water sits within forested terrain and draws visitors interested in exploring mountain landscapes and natural formations.
The area developed during early 20th century Japanese rule and was previously indigenous Tsou territory. The region transitioned from indigenous land into a center for timber harvesting operations.
The region maintains strong ties to traditional tea cultivation, with local farmers producing premium Alishan High Mountain Oolong tea at elevated altitudes.
The lake is reached through hiking trails starting from Shanlinxi Forest Recreation Area, which offers camping and basic facilities near the water. Visit during drier months when trails are most accessible for safe passage through the terrain.
Beneath the water surface, tree trunks from before the flooding remain preserved, creating a submerged forest. This sunken wood forms an unusual underwater landscape that can be observed through snorkeling or with specialized viewing equipment.
