Penglai Waterfall, Natural waterfall in Gukeng Township, Yunlin County, Taiwan.
Penglai Waterfall is a natural waterfall in Gukeng Township, Yunlin County, falling from rocky cliffs into a forested valley. At the base, the water collects in shallow pools before continuing downstream through the surrounding trees.
A cable car once carried visitors to a viewing point above the waterfall, until the 1999 earthquake badly damaged the installation. After that, access was limited to the hiking trails that wind through the valley on foot.
People from nearby towns come here on weekends for hiking and picnics, especially during the warmer months when the cool spray offers relief from the heat. The trail leading to the waterfall is well used by local families and outdoor enthusiasts alike.
The waterfall is reached on foot from trailheads in the surrounding area, and sturdy shoes are strongly recommended as some sections are steep and can be slippery after rain. Bringing enough water is a good idea since there are no facilities along the way.
The amount of water falling changes so much between seasons that the waterfall looks like a completely different place depending on when you visit. After summer rains the flow is strong and wide, while in dry months it narrows to a thin stream threading down the rock face.
