Yuntan Waterfall

Yuntan Waterfall is located in the mountains of Chiayi County and consists of three separate levels dropping about 200 meters in total. The water flows over distinct rock formations, changing speed and pattern as it descends through each stage.

The waterfall became part of the Alishan National Scenic Area protection plan, which established the region as a nature conservation zone. This designation helped secure the long-term care of the landscape.

Local residents maintain traditional celebrations near the waterfall, incorporating water rituals and seasonal ceremonies throughout the year.

The waterfall can be reached via a walking trail from Jiaoliping Station on the Alishan Forest Railway, with signs marking the way. Good footwear is important since the path crosses uneven ground and becomes slippery after rain.

Each of the three levels produces different sounds when water strikes the rocks, creating a natural concert of acoustic effects. These varying tones come from how the rock surfaces are shaped and angled, giving each stage its own distinctive voice.
