Green Grass Lake, lake in Hsinchu
Green Grass Lake is a small body of water in the east of Hsinchu surrounded by walking trails and cycling paths. The lake offers views in all directions and is framed by green trees and various bird species, with the complete loop around the water measuring about 3.4 kilometers.
The lake was built in 1956 as a dam to provide water for agriculture and flood control. After 1987, the government stopped using the dam and transformed the area into a park, with changing water conditions leading to the growth of reed plants.
The name comes from the aquatic plants that characterize the water and give the place its appearance. Visitors can observe how the local community uses this spot for leisure and how it reflects everyday life in Hsinchu.
The site is accessible by bus line 73 or with rental bikes from the nearby university campus, with a ride from the station taking about 24 minutes. The trails are simple and easy to walk, with signs and maps helping visitors navigate and find available routes.
Near the lake are several places with particular history, such as the Filial Son's Gate from 1882 and Lingyin Temple with old lanterns from a former shrine. These places show a blend of local and historical traditions that visitors often overlook.
