Image Museum of Hsinchu City, Cinema museum in East District, Hsinchu, Taiwan.
The Image Museum of Hsinchu City is a four-story building featuring a classical Roman facade blended with Arabian architectural details situated on Zhongzheng Road. Inside you will find film history exhibitions, regular screenings, a bookstore, and a restaurant serving visitors.
The building was constructed in 1933 as the Yule Theater and became Taiwan's first air-conditioned cinema of its time. After 1945 it operated under government management as the Guomin Cinema.
The museum maintains extensive archives of cinematographic works, historical artifacts, and organizes monthly film presentations focusing on independent Taiwanese productions.
The museum sits within a short walk from Hsinchu Station, making it easy to reach by local transport. Check opening hours and exhibition schedules before visiting, as programs change throughout the year.
The second floor displays visible scars from Allied bombing raids in 1944, which were repaired after World War II ended. These marks on the structure tell the story of the conflict and how the city rebuilt itself afterward.
