Hsinchu City Art Site of Railway Warehouse, Railway warehouse art center in East District, Hsinchu, Taiwan.
The Hsinchu City Art Site of Railway Warehouse is an art center in three converted storage buildings from the old railway yard. The structures provide exhibition spaces, artist studios, and a viewing point where trains can be observed passing by.
The buildings were built in 1941 as warehouses for the Taiwan Railway Company during the Japanese occupation period. They were later converted into an art center and given historical building protection status in 2015.
The space attracts artists who create work in the studios and display pieces through rotating exhibitions. The rooms keep the feeling of a working place, where art-making happens within the context of industrial heritage.
The center is located northeast of Hsinchu Station and is easily reached on foot. Exhibitions and cultural events happen regularly throughout the year and are open to visitors.
The structure keeps its original wooden roof built with traditional Japanese jointing methods that require no modern fasteners. This type of crafted construction rarely survives and makes the building architecturally notable.
