Hsinchu City East Gate, City gate in East District, Hsinchu, Taiwan.
Hsinchu City East Gate is a city gate and national monument in the East District of Hsinchu, Taiwan. The two-story tower rests on a granite foundation and displays arched passages on both eastern and western sides.
The gate was built in 1826 during the Qing Dynasty as part of the city fortifications. When the city walls were torn down in 1902, it remained as the only entrance to survive.
The name Yingxi above the main entrance follows the Chinese tradition of naming city gates after their cardinal direction and function. The gate now serves as a meeting point and orientation landmark in the city center.
The gate is located about three minutes on foot from Hsinchu Railway Station and is accessible via several bus stops. YouBike rental stations are available nearby for bicycle access.
During the 1996 renovation, the surroundings were transformed into the Heart of Hsinchu, featuring modern light installations and a glass bridge. These elements connect the historic structure with contemporary urban design.
