雙園大橋, Cable-stayed bridge in Kaohsiung, Taiwan
The Shuangyuan Bridge is a cable-stayed crossing spanning about 2,800 meters across the Kaoping River, linking Linyuan District in Kaohsiung with Xinyuan Township in Pingtung County. Its steel box girder design with 19 piers provides extra structural support and resilience.
An original crossing opened in 1979 but was destroyed by Typhoon Morakot in 2009. A replacement was constructed and opened to traffic on December 23, 2011.
The name combines the character 'yuan' from both districts it links, Linyuan and Xinyuan, earning it the title Bridge of Two Gardens. This naming reflects how the structure symbolizes the connection between these two communities.
The bridge sits on Provincial Highway 17 and serves as the main transport link between Kaohsiung and the Xinyuan and Donggang regions in Pingtung County. As the closest crossing point near where the Kaoping River meets the sea, it handles steady vehicle flow and is best accessed by private transportation.
The structure was engineered specifically to withstand flooding with robust steel construction and multiple piers positioned to resist powerful typhoons. Its location near where the river reaches the sea makes it a strategically important passage that handles water-level changes and coastal weather patterns.
