Tainan Astronomical Education Area, Astronomical education complex in Danei District, Taiwan.
The Tainan Astronomical Education Area is an astronomy complex in Danei District, Taiwan, that brings together a planetarium, museum galleries, and open-air observation decks. It also houses the largest ground-based telescope in Taiwan, which is used for both public sessions and scientific work.
Planning for the complex started in 2004, with the first sections opening to the public in 2006 and full operations beginning in 2013. The project was built to bring astronomy to audiences beyond universities and research institutes, reaching schools and general visitors across Taiwan.
Schools and families from across Taiwan visit regularly, making this one of the most used science education sites in the south of the country. Group observation sessions held at night are among the most popular activities, with guides leading visitors through the night sky.
Visiting on a clear night gives the best chance of using the outdoor observation areas and attending a telescope session. Daytime visits are also worthwhile since the indoor galleries and planetarium can be enjoyed in any weather.
The grounds were shaped to resemble the surface of the Moon, with terrain deliberately sculpted into hills and craters at an elevation of about 110 meters. Visitors often only notice this when they look down from one of the higher viewpoints and see the landscape laid out below them.
