Khóo Tsú-song old house

Khóo Tsú-song old house is a two-story red brick building on a hilltop near Miaokou Night Market, featuring symmetrical stairways and traditional Fukien architectural details. The structure displays regional building qualities that show the craftsmanship of its era.

Built in 1931, the residence was home to Khóo Tsú-song, who served as mayor of Renai District during the Japanese colonial period and helped shape local administration. Its construction reflects the period when Keelung was developing its urban character under colonial influence.

The house blends Western design with traditional Taiwanese elements, and its three-sided courtyard layout reflects regional building customs that people still recognize today. Walking through the interior, you can see how these two styles come together in the spaces where families once lived.

Reach the site by walking through narrow alleyways from Miaokou Night Market and heading up Aisi Road, where signs point the way to the entrance. Wear comfortable shoes since the climb is steep and the pathways are uneven in places.

Banyan tree roots have spread through the abandoned building and woven themselves into the remaining architectural features, creating an intricate natural network. This slow overtaking by nature makes the passage of time visually striking during a visit.
