Lukang Old House of Ding Family, Qing dynasty mansion in Lukang Township, Taiwan
The Ding Family residence is a traditional mansion in Lukang that spans 70 meters along Zhongshan Road. The estate comprises three buildings connected by two courtyards designed in the classical Heyuan architectural style.
The house was founded in 1821 by merchant Ding Pu-Shi from Quanzhou, who established the trading company Xie Yuan Hao in Lukang. The residence became part of the wealthy merchant class that shaped the town during Qing times.
The family maintained ancestral shrines and quality furnishings that show how well-to-do households lived in the 1800s. Walking through, you can see how rooms were arranged and what objects filled their daily life.
The residence is open Tuesday through Sunday from 9:15 AM to 4:30 PM, allowing visitors to explore the interior spaces at their own pace. Guided tours are available if you prefer detailed explanations about the building's history.
The estate features defensive Ai Gates positioned in its courtyards, a protective element that was typical in Lukang during the Qing period. These specialized gate designs allowed residents to control access to the house and defend against threats.
