Lukang Township, Historical port town in Changhua County, Taiwan

Lukang Township is an administrative division in Changhua County, western Taiwan. The settlement contains a dense street network with old brick and timber facades, numerous temples, and shops clustered in a compact area.

During the 18th and 19th centuries, this port settlement served as a trading hub for deerskin, rice, and sugar between Taiwan and mainland China. Maritime traffic later declined as the coastline shifted and other harbors became more favorably positioned.

Local artisans maintain traditional crafts in workshops throughout the township, creating hand-painted lanterns, carved religious statues, and decorative paper fans.

Visitors reach the area by taking the high-speed rail to Taichung Station, then transferring to a shuttle bus. Most alleys and temples are easily explored on foot, though sturdy shoes help with uneven paving.

Several merchant families of Arab and Persian origin settled here in the 13th century, founding a Muslim community with its own cemetery. In several streets, the rooftops are arranged to form Chinese characters when viewed from above.
