Museum of Traditional Theater, Traditional theater museum in Chaozhou Township, Taiwan.
The Museum of Traditional Theater is a single-story wooden building with black tile roof, brick walls, and traditional sliding windows that houses theatrical collections. Inside, visitors encounter costumes, props, and interactive displays showcasing different forms of performance art.
The building dates from 1916 when it was constructed during Japanese colonial rule as a government office. It later served as a post office until 2006, when it was transformed into this museum.
The exhibitions display traditional theatrical arts through costumes, props, and multimedia presentations that reflect the performance styles once popular in this region. Visitors encounter how Peking opera, Taiwanese Hokkien opera, and puppetry shaped local entertainment and artistic identity.
The museum sits about 15 minutes on foot from Chaozhou Train Station and is easy to reach by walking. It opens daily during morning and afternoon hours with no entrance fee required.
The collection holds dozens of hand-crafted puppets created by master craftsperson Su Ming-xiong, showcasing different techniques and performance styles. These rare figures offer insight into the specialized craftsmanship that defined puppet theater in this region.
