Hsi Fu Temple, Confucian temple in Taoyuan, Taiwan.
Hsi Fu Temple is a Confucian temple in Taoyuan, Taiwan, featuring carved exterior walls, open courtyards, and altar spaces arranged in a traditional Chinese layout. The building follows a central courtyard plan that organizes the different areas used for ceremonies and study.
The temple was built in 1989, during a period when interest in Confucian teachings was growing in Taiwan. It is one of the more recent Confucian sites in the country, even though it follows architectural forms that go back many centuries.
Students and scholars visit to take part in Confucian ceremonies and study classical texts in a living setting. The open layout of the courtyards makes these practices visible to any visitor who passes through.
The temple is close to Taoyuan Station, making it easy to reach on foot from the city center. A morning visit tends to work well, as the courtyards are less busy and the ceremonial areas are easy to walk through.
Although the temple dates from 1989, it was built using craft techniques that very few workers in Taiwan still master. The wood carvings and roof decorations were made by specialist artisans who still practice these skills today.
