Renhai Temple

Renhai Temple is a Chinese temple in Zhongli featuring ornately decorated halls with painted wooden beams and detailed stone carvings throughout. The compound includes several interconnected courtyards with various worship spaces and altar areas.

The temple was established in 1826 originally enshrining the goddess Guanyin. In 1828, the statue of Mazu from Beigang's Chaotian Temple was brought here and became the temple's principal deity.

This temple serves as a gathering place where local residents regularly participate in traditional ceremonies and seasonal festivals together. The religious practices and community events shape the neighborhood's daily rhythm and social bonds.

The temple is open daily from early morning to evening and is easily accessible to visitors. Allow enough time to explore the different halls and courtyards at a comfortable pace.

During a military campaign in the 1800s, a high-ranking foreign visitor used this temple as a temporary residence. The choice reflected the site's importance and standing in the region at that time.
