Old Taiwan Bank Dormitory, Historical dormitory in Beitou District, Taiwan.
The Old Taiwan Bank Dormitory is a historic building complex in Beitou District, Taipei, made up of three main structures arranged around a shared courtyard. The buildings sit at different levels, connected by open passageways that give the site a clear spatial layout.
The main building was originally constructed in 1935 as the Shin Matsushita Hotel, serving guests visiting the Beitou area. The Bank of Taiwan took over the property in 1941 and turned it into a club and staff accommodation.
The building's facade combines Japanese structural forms with Western decorative details, a mix that was common during Taiwan's colonial era. Visitors who look closely at the exterior and interior spaces can see both influences side by side.
The complex is in Beitou District and is easy to reach by public transport. Because the buildings are on different levels and connected through the courtyard, comfortable shoes are a good idea before you start walking around.
The main building was not built on solid ground but instead spans a natural streambed, using a method closer to bridge construction than standard building. This detail is still visible from below the structure and is easy to miss if you do not look for it.
