Tianmu White House, Historic residential building in Shilin District, Taiwan.
The Tianmu White House is a historic residential building from 1953 in Shilin covering about 132 square meters. The structure combines Western architectural elements like window styles and roof lines with Asian design details in its decorations.
The building was constructed in 1953 when the Republic of China acquired agricultural land for housing and built homes for American military families during the Korean War. The area developed into a significant residential zone with growing Western influence during this period.
The building shows how Western residential styles took root in Taipei during the 1950s and still shape the neighborhood's character today. Visitors can see the blend of foreign influences and local traditions that defined this residential zone.
The building has been managed by the Taipei City Urban Regeneration Office since 2014 and opened to visitors in July 2016. You should check current opening hours before visiting, as the house is regularly used and not always accessible.
The original brickwork was entirely painted white in 2006 for filming of the Taiwanese production The Magicians of Love. This transformation to the white house became permanent and now defines the site's appearance today.
