Xinbeitou Shanguang Temple

Xinbeitou Shanguang Temple is a Buddhist temple situated on a hillside in Beitou District featuring multiple traditional structures with Eastern architectural details. The complex spreads across different levels of the slope, creating a layered arrangement of buildings and spiritual spaces.

Founded in 1932 during Japanese rule, this temple later provided shelter for Japanese families from Tamsui seeking refuge during World War II air raids. This protective role became an important chapter in the site's history during a turbulent period for the region.

This temple follows the Seizan-Fukakusa sect of Jodo-shu Buddhism and maintains spiritual practices that reflect its Japanese Buddhist heritage. Visitors can observe how the site functions as a place of worship and reflection for both local devotees and pilgrims throughout the year.

The temple sits near Xinbeitou's hot spring area and is accessible by public transportation from the district center. Visitors can easily combine a visit here with time spent at the thermal baths located in the nearby surroundings.

One of the main structures originally operated as a hot spring hotel before the Bank of Taiwan acquired it in 1941. This unexpected past reveals how the location transformed from a commercial establishment into a spiritual center.
