Yangmingshan American Military Housing, Military housing complex in Yangmingshan, Taiwan
Yangmingshan American Military Housing is a residential complex with 217 buildings spread across roughly 14 hectares near Taipei's Chinese Culture University. The settlement features single-story homes arranged throughout a sloped, wooded area with various tree species and open spaces between structures.
The US military established this housing settlement in 1950 to accommodate officers and advisors supporting training missions during the Cold War. The complex remained an important center for American military operations in Taiwan for several decades.
The homes reflect American suburban design from the mid-1900s, with open floor plans, fireplaces, and yards without fences that contrasted with how people typically built homes in Taiwan. Walking through the area, you notice how this foreign style became part of the local landscape.
You can reach the area easily by bus from the nearby MRT Jiantan Station. The terrain is hilly and spread out, so wear comfortable shoes and plan time to walk between different sections of the complex.
Around 60 protected heritage trees grow throughout the site, including native Taiwan banyan and camphorwood species that shelter local birds and wildlife. These old trees are woven into the fabric of the settlement and help explain why it receives heritage protection today.
