Fenniaolin Fishing Port, Fishing port in Suao Township, Taiwan.
Fenniaolin Fishing Port is a working harbor on the Yilan coast in Suao, Taiwan, where fishing boats of different sizes moor along several docks. The port sits inside a natural cove, with mountains visible behind the waterfront and storage areas and boat sheds spread along the shore.
The port was built to give the fishing communities of the Yilan region a fixed place to land and store their catch. Over several decades it grew from a basic landing point into a proper harbor with docks and facilities serving local fishing families.
Fishermen sell their daily catch directly from the docks to locals and visitors, giving the port the feel of an open-air market. Buyers arrive early, choosing fish straight from the boats before the catch moves on to nearby restaurants or markets.
Coming in the early morning gives you the best chance to see the fish auction and the boats coming in with their catch. A second visit in the late afternoon is also worthwhile, as many boats return from sea at that time.
Small seafood restaurants near the docks let you pick a live fish directly from a tank, and the kitchen cooks it while you wait at a table overlooking the water. This means the fish you eat may have been in the sea just hours before.
