Zaporizhzhia International Airport, airport
Zaporizhzhia International Airport is a commercial airport in the city of Zaporizhzhia in Ukraine that operates both domestic and international flights. The modern terminal completed in 2020 can handle up to one million passengers yearly, with a wide concrete runway designed to support large aircraft including Airbus and Boeing models as well as helicopters.
The airport was established in 1943 shortly after Zaporizhzhia was freed from Nazi forces, initially serving domestic flights. Over the decades the runway was extended and terminals were added, making it a regional transportation hub with up to 150 daily flights during Soviet times, though activity declined after Ukraine's independence in the 1990s.
The airport is situated on the eastern side of the city and can be reached easily by car or taxi, with parking areas for visitors who arrive by vehicle. An on-site Tourist Information Center provides travelers with details about local hotels, restaurants and sights in Zaporizhzhia, as well as the opportunity to purchase souvenirs.
The airport played a key role in regional connectivity, linking Zaporizhzhia from its founding in 1943 with Moscow and other Soviet cities. This legacy as a transportation hub makes it an important location in the city's history, even though recent events have made its future significance uncertain.
