Palanok Castle, Medieval fortress on volcanic hill in Mukachevo, Ukraine
Palanok Castle is a fortress on a volcanic hill with three distinct sections—the high castle, middle castle, and low castle—connected by a network of stone passageways. The structure features thick defensive walls, round towers, and underground passages that visitors can explore.
Between 1396 and 1414, Prince Fyodor Koryatovich transformed the original wooden structure into a stone fortress, adding defensive walls and round towers. This transformation made it a major defensive position in the region.
The museum inside the castle walls displays regional artifacts, traditional wooden church exhibits, and historical military equipment that show how people lived and defended themselves in this area.
The castle is open year-round, with guided tours available in multiple languages through all three castle sections and underground passages. Wear sturdy shoes as the stone passages can be uneven and slippery in places.
The castle features an 85-meter deep well that, according to local legends, required supernatural intervention to access water during construction. This tale adds an air of mystery that fascinates many visitors exploring the site.
