Schönborn palace in Mukachevo, Palast in der Ukraine
Schönborn palace is a country residence on the outskirts of Mukachevo in western Ukraine, built in a mix of Renaissance and Neoclassical styles. Its facade is symmetrical, with paired corner turrets and tall arched windows, and the building sits within an English-style park planted with trees that are rare in this region.
A wooden hunting lodge stood on this site from 1728, used by the Schönborn family during hunting seasons on their estate. Around 1890, the family replaced it with the current stone building.
The palace has served as a sanatorium since the late 1940s, and visitors come here for health stays in rooms that still carry their original stonework and wood paneling. Walking through the building gives a sense of how noble interiors once looked when the estate was a private retreat.
The palace is about 10 kilometers northeast of Mukachevo's center and is most easily reached by car. Visits typically cover both the building and the surrounding park, so wearing comfortable shoes and allowing enough time to walk the grounds is a good idea.
The building was designed with a calendar built into it: 365 windows for the days of the year, 52 rooms for the weeks, and 12 entrances for the months. These numbers are not labeled anywhere, so most visitors walk through without noticing the pattern.
