Pivdennyi Bridge, Cable-stayed bridge in Kyiv, Ukraine
Pivdennyi Bridge is a cable-stayed structure spanning the Dnieper River to link Saperno-Slobidska Street with the Poznyaky district. It carries six lanes of traffic above a railway deck that holds two metro lines and includes sidewalks for walking.
Construction began in the early 1980s under engineer Georgy Fuks to improve city connections. Vehicle traffic opened in 1990, with the metro service arriving in the early 1990s to complete the link.
The bridge takes its name from its southern position and stands out in the city skyline with its distinctive single pylon. Visitors notice how cars and metro trains share the same structure as they move across it.
The bridge carries constant traffic and metro trains throughout the day, so expect it to be busiest during morning and evening rush hours. Sidewalks allow you to walk across and take in views of the river and city.
Hidden within the concrete structure is a staircase system that connects the road level to the highest point of the bridge. Few visitors realize this access route exists and can be discovered during exploration.
