Darnyzkyj-Eisenbahnbrücke, Railway bridge in Kyiv, Ukraine.
The Darnyzkyj Railway Bridge is a railway crossing over the Dnieper River in Kyiv that links the city center with the Darnytsia district. The structure features steel truss arches combined with reinforced concrete arches, containing 16 openings and spanning approximately 1114 meters.
Construction of the current bridge began in 1946 to replace the Struve Railway Bridge, which suffered severe damage during World War II. The new structure was designed to restore rail connections between the eastern and western sections of the city.
The bridge connects central Kyiv's main railway station with the Darnytsia station across the river, serving as a crucial passage for commuters and travelers daily. It represents an essential link that shaped how the city developed on both sides of the Dnieper.
Trains operate regularly across the bridge as part of Kyiv's northern rail network, so be prepared for train sounds and vibrations if you walk near it. The best time to visit is during off-peak hours or to experience it from a passing train rather than from the bridge itself.
The longest span of the bridge measures around 109 meters, demonstrating remarkable engineering for its time in the hybrid design. This combination of steel and concrete elements allowed engineers to cross the wide river opening without needing support columns in the middle section.
