Far Caves

The Far Caves form an underground monastery beneath Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, consisting of a network of tunnels with multiple chambers and passageways. This complex underground structure spreads across several levels and holds religious artifacts and artworks that have survived for centuries.

The monastery began when Venerable Anthony settled in a cave around 1051, establishing the foundation for a monastic community. Over centuries, the site grew into a major religious center as the underground complex expanded deeper into the earth.

The chambers hold burial sites of Orthodox saints and monks, with religious icons and frescoes adorning the underground walls. Visitors come to these spaces to feel connected to the holy figures interred within them.

Access through narrow passages requires appropriate clothing since temperatures stay cool year-round and movement space is limited in some areas. Wearing comfortable shoes and preparing mentally for confined spaces helps make the visit more enjoyable.

The underground tunnels maintain a constant temperature year-round, which has helped preserve ancient religious manuscripts and mummified remains of monks. This natural preservation ability has fascinated visitors for generations who get to see medieval artifacts firsthand.
