Forts of Lysa Hora, Military fortification in Holosiiv Raion, Ukraine
The Forts of Lysa Hora are a military complex in Kyiv featuring a main rampart, two bastions, and a half-bastion. Eight brick tunnels extend approximately 40 meters into the structure, forming the underground network of this fortification.
General Eduard Totleben designed these fortifications between 1871 and 1877 as part of modernizing the Kyiv Fortress complex. The site emerged during a period of strengthening the city's defenses in the 19th century.
The site features a four-sided statue of the deity Perun surrounded by four fire pits and gates that resemble Shinto shrine structures. These elements blend Eastern and local traditions in the space.
The site is accessible through the main entrance near Vydubychi railway station or through additional entry points along Nauky Avenue near the meteorological station. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes as the paths and tunnels can be uneven.
The fort walls preserve inscriptions left by soldiers since the 1880s, documenting multiple generations of military presence. These markings offer a personal glimpse into the daily lives of troops stationed here.
