Памятник Чекистам, Soviet memorial at Lybidska Square, Ukraine
The Memorial to Chekists was a granite stele located at Lybidska Square in Kyiv, featuring carved faces of two revolutionary fighters. The structure rose vertically from the center of the plaza as a solid stone monument.
Built in 1967 on what was then called Dzerzhinsky Square, the monument honored security service members who died during the early years of Soviet rule. The site itself was renamed Lybidska Square in later years.
The monument was created by Ukrainian sculptor Vasyl Boroday and served as a familiar landmark in the city's public space for decades. It reflected how the community related to its public spaces during a particular historical period.
The monument was located in a central area of the city near major transportation routes, making it easy to reach and useful as a navigation reference point. Its position made it simple for visitors to understand where they were in relation to other parts of the city.
The memorial bore an inscription carved directly into its granite surface, honoring the security service members it commemorated. This carved dedication was an integral part of the monument's design and message.
