National Philharmonic of Ukraine, Concert hall in central Kyiv, Ukraine.
The National Philharmonic of Ukraine is a concert hall in central Kyiv housed in a grand 19th-century building. The structure contains two concert spaces and displays white columns with intricate architectural details along Khreshchatyk Street.
The building was constructed in the late 1800s as a merchant house and survived World War II by serving as a German military officers' club from 1941 to 1944. After the war it was converted into a philharmonic venue and has functioned as a concert space since then.
The orchestra here performs works by Ukrainian and international composers that visitors can experience during concerts. The performances show a musical tradition that has developed in this space over many decades.
The building is easily accessible from the main street and all areas are wheelchair accessible for visitors. It is worth arriving early to explore the architecture and foyer, particularly if you have time between performances.
In 2000 the Japanese government funded new musical instruments for the orchestra, helping establish it as a recognized force in Eastern European classical music. This international support enabled significant improvements to the sound quality of performances.
