Bridge of Love, Pedestrian bridge in central Kyiv, Ukraine
The Bridge of Love is a steel pedestrian bridge in Kyiv connecting the city center to Trukhaniv Island, a green recreational area along the Dnieper River. It runs directly over the river's main shipping channel, which sets it apart from most other crossings in the city.
The bridge first opened in 1910 as one of the earliest fixed links between central Kyiv and Trukhaniv Island. It was entirely redesigned and rebuilt in 1957, giving the structure the form it still has today.
The railings are covered with padlocks left by couples as a sign of their bond, a habit that has built up over many years. The bridge draws people who come not just to cross it, but to walk slowly and look at the river.
The bridge is easy to reach on foot from the city center and can be crossed at any time of day. If you plan to continue onto Trukhaniv Island, wear comfortable shoes since the island paths are unpaved in many spots.
Because the bridge crosses the Dnieper's active shipping channel, large cargo vessels pass directly underneath it. Standing on the bridge and watching a ship move through gives a sense of scale that most urban bridges do not offer.
