Podilskyi Bridge, Arch bridge in Podil district, Kyiv, Ukraine
The Podilskyi Bridge is an arch bridge over the Dnipro River in the Podil district of Kyiv, Ukraine, measuring 18 meters wide. It has two levels: one for road traffic and one for the metro line running through an integrated tunnel.
Construction work started in 2003, after technical studies between 1987 and 1989 identified the need for new transport links through the growing city. The first section opened in December 2023 for emergency services, with full operation following completion of the tunnel works.
The structure links Podil on the western shore, a district filled with antique shops and traditional craft workshops, to newer residential neighborhoods on the eastern side. Its name comes from the old commercial quarter, where merchants once reached the riverbanks over land routes.
Access to the bridge is through main roads on both riverbanks, where footpaths and cycling lanes ease the crossing. Visitors find wide sidewalks along the upper level, suitable for longer walks and views.
This river crossing ranks among the largest arch bridges in Europe, carrying both vehicles and trains on separate decks. The design combines steel arches with concrete piers, distributing loads without visible supports in the central span.
