Kyiv National Academic Theatre of Drama and Comedy, Theatre in Kyiv
The Kyiv National Academic Theatre of Drama and Comedy is a theatre on the left bank of the Dnieper River in Kyiv, housed in a building that was originally constructed as a cinema. It has a main stage for full productions and a smaller stage in the entrance foyer.
The theatre was founded in 1978 and gave its first performance in 1979, starting with contemporary plays focused on social themes. Over the following decades it broadened its repertoire to take in classical works and a wider range of genres.
The theatre sits in a building originally designed as a cinema, and traces of that past are still visible in the layout of the main hall. It stands in the left bank district of Kyiv, an area that has long had its own identity separate from the historic city center.
The theatre is on the left bank of the Dnieper and is easy to reach by metro or bus from the city center. Getting tickets in advance is a good idea, as popular shows tend to sell out well before the performance date.
The small foyer stage was one of the first spaces of its kind in Kyiv and in Ukraine as a whole, created to try out theatrical forms that a large main stage would not easily allow. It showed that a lobby could work as a real performance space, not just a waiting area.
