Аверкієва шахта, Karst cave in Dolgorukovskaya Yayla, Ukraine.
Averkieva Cave is a karst cave located on the Dolgorukovskaya Yayla plateau with a complex system of vertical shafts. The underground passages branch in multiple directions, creating different routes through the limestone structure.
The cave was named in 1960 by a Crimean Karst Expedition team in honor of researcher Konstantin Averkiev. It had previously been known by a different local name reflecting earlier recognition of the site.
The temperature measurements at different depths reveal variations from 6.8°C at 30 meters to 9.1°C at the lower levels.
The cave requires proper preparation and cannot be accessed without equipment, as entry involves negotiating steep shafts. Visitors should be accompanied by experienced guides and bring appropriate clothing for underground conditions.
The cave contains clay deposits with remnants of large animal bones, indicating the presence of prehistoric megafauna in the area. A temporary water stream that forms during rainy periods creates a natural link between this system and a neighboring cave.
