Suvuq Qoba, Limestone cave in Chatyr-Dag plateau, Ukraine.

Suvuq Qoba is a limestone cave on the Chatyr-Dag plateau situated at about 991 meters above sea level. It contains multiple chambers with stalactites and stalagmites formed by water constantly dripping from the ceiling.

The zoologist Konstantin Merezhkovsky conducted excavations in 1879 and discovered Paleolithic remains including coal and bones. These archaeological finds indicate that the area was inhabited during the Stone Age.

The name Suvuq Qoba comes from the Crimean Tatar language and means Cold Cave, a name reflecting the constant temperature of about 5 degrees Celsius inside. Local people value this place for its extreme cold and its role as a water source for the region.

Exploring the cave requires specialized equipment and expert guidance due to challenging conditions inside. It is wise to check access rules and necessary safety precautions before planning your visit.

An underground spring feeds the cave with a constant flow of frigid water, creating distinctive echo effects under the vaulted chambers. This carefully maintained water stream has shaped the formations for millennia and today serves as an important drinking water source for surrounding communities.
